Prices and compare-at prices on Shopify

How to bulk edit prices on Shopify

To bulk edit prices on Shopify, select products in Products, click Bulk edit and change the Price and Compare-at price columns. For hundreds of variants, export a product CSV, recalculate prices in a spreadsheet and import it with overwrite on. For percent changes with a preview, a schedule or a saved restore point, use a bulk price editor app.

Key takeaways

  • Shopify's bulk editor is a spreadsheet-style grid: you can change Price and Compare-at price for many products at once, but you type or paste every value yourself.
  • A product CSV handles large catalogs, and spreadsheet formulas do the percent math; keep an untouched export, because a running import can't be canceled.
  • Market catalogs raise or lower prices by a percentage for one market without changing your base prices.
  • Shopify Flow can change prices on a schedule, but you build, test and reverse the workflow yourself.
  • A bulk price editor app such as Sale Scheduler by SalePilot adds percent or amount rules, price endings, a preview and saved previous prices to restore.

What are the ways to bulk edit prices on Shopify?

Shopify gives you four native ways to change many prices at once, and apps add a fifth. The right one depends on how many variants you're changing, whether the change is a percentage, and whether you'll need the old prices back later.

All of them change the same two fields: each variant's Price and, if you use it, its Compare-at price. Prices live on variants, not products, so a T-shirt in 4 sizes and 3 colors has 12 prices. Count variants when you pick a method, because that number decides how much typing a manual method means.

  • Bulk editor: a spreadsheet-style grid in your Shopify admin where you type or paste new values for the products you selected.
  • Product CSV: export your products, change the price columns in a spreadsheet, and import the file to overwrite the old values.
  • Market catalogs: raise or lower all prices for one market by a percentage, without touching your base prices.
  • Shopify Flow: a workflow that changes prices through Shopify's Admin API, optionally on a schedule, which you build and test yourself.
  • A bulk price editor app: a rule such as "decrease by 20%" applied to the products you target, usually with a preview and a way to restore.

Which bulk editing method should you use?

The table compares the methods on the three points that usually decide it: how the new prices are calculated, whether the change can start and end on a schedule, and how you get the old prices back if something goes wrong.

A rough rule: under 20 variants, the product page or the bulk editor is fine. From a few dozen to thousands of variants, use a CSV or an app. If the change has an end date, such as a sale, plan the way back before you start, because none of the native methods remembers your previous prices for you.

How do you bulk edit prices with Shopify's bulk editor?

Use the bulk editor when you're changing a few dozen products by hand. It shows the products you selected as rows and their properties, such as price, SKU and compare-at price, as columns. Shopify's bulk editing guide covers every control.

Know its limits before you start. Shopify's guide describes no percentage or formula option, so a 10% change means working out every new price first. The editor also keeps no copy of the old prices, and for larger lists Shopify itself points to CSV files instead.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Products. Use search and filters to show only the products you want to change.
  2. Select them with the checkboxes, then click Bulk edit.
  3. Click Columns and add Price and Compare-at price if they aren't already shown.
  4. Type the new values. To copy one value down a column, drag the cell's fill handle; Shift-click selects a range of cells.
  5. Review every row, then click Save. If a cell shows an error, fix it and save again.

How do you bulk edit prices with a CSV file?

A product CSV is the native route for large changes, because a spreadsheet recalculates thousands of rows with one formula. In Shopify's current product template the columns are Price and Compare-at price; older exports and templates call them Variant Price and Variant Compare At Price. Each variant has its own row, tied to its product by the URL handle and its option values (Shopify's CSV column reference).

When you update existing products, Shopify only requires the URL handle and Title columns, and it overwrites the matching columns that are in your file. The safest habit is still to keep the export intact and change only the price cells.

  1. Go to Products, click Export, and choose all products or the current search. Save one copy you never edit: it's your backup.
  2. Open the working copy in a spreadsheet. Shopify recommends Google Sheets for CSV files.
  3. Add a helper column with your formula, for example =ROUND(U2*1.1, 2) for a 10% increase if Price is in column U. Paste the results back into Price as values.
  4. Leave every other column as exported, and don't sort the sheet: Shopify warns that sorting can separate variants and image URLs from their products.
  5. Go to Products, click Import, choose the file and select Overwrite products with matching handles.
  6. Review the summary, click Import products, then spot-check a few products in the admin and on your storefront.

Two CSV rules prevent most accidents. With overwrite selected, a blank cell in a non-required column replaces the existing value with blank, so don't clear cells you aren't changing. And an import can't be canceled once it starts, so keep the untouched export as your way back. Files over 15 MB must be split into smaller files (Shopify's import guide).

Can Shopify change prices by a percentage?

Not in the bulk editor or on the product page, where you enter final prices. Two native features do work with percentages, each for a specific job.

Market catalogs let you enter one percentage that raises or lowers all prices in a market's catalog. By default the adjustment also applies to compare-at prices, and a fixed price you set for a product overrides it (Creating catalogs for markets). That's useful for regional pricing, but it changes what customers in that market pay, not your base prices.

Shopify Flow is a free Shopify app available on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans. Its Scheduled time trigger starts a workflow at a date and time you choose, and its Send Admin API request action can run most GraphQL Admin API mutations. In practice you write the product selection, the price math, the testing and the reverse workflow yourself.

Whatever tool you use, the formula is the same. New price = current price × (1 + percent ÷ 100) for an increase, and current price × (1 − percent ÷ 100) for a decrease. A $40.00 product decreased by 25% becomes $30.00; increased by 8% it becomes $43.20. Our price change calculator runs a whole pasted price list, with rounding, before you touch the store.

What should you look for in a bulk price editor app?

Apps exist because the native tools stop at typing values. A good bulk price editor does the math, shows you the result and remembers where you started. Before you install one, check how it answers these questions:

  • Rules: can it increase, decrease or set prices by percent and by fixed amount, and handle compare-at prices separately from prices?
  • Targeting: can you pick collections, single products, specific variants or a condition such as a vendor or tag, and exclude items?
  • Preview: does it show the before and after price of every variant before anything is written to Shopify?
  • Price endings: can it round results to .99, .95 or an ending you choose?
  • Ending and undo: does it save the previous prices, and can it restore them on a schedule or on demand?
  • Conflicts: what happens if a price was changed somewhere else after the edit? A careful restore skips that variant rather than overwrite the newer price.
  • Plan limits: what counts toward the limit, and do previews or restores count?

How does Sale Scheduler handle bulk price edits?

SalePilot's bulk price editor applies one rule to every variant you target. The price actions are Increase price and Decrease price (by percent or by amount), Set new price, Set to compare-at price and Don't change price. Compare-at prices have their own 8 actions, from Set compare-at price to original price to Remove compare-at price, and new prices can be rounded to end in .00, .49, .50, .90, .95, .99 or a custom decimal.

You target all products, collections, products, specific variants, or one advanced condition on product title, tag, vendor, product type or SKU, and you can add one type of exclusion: collections, products or variants. The review screen then lists each variant's price before and after with a status. Ready rows will be applied; Warning rows, where the compare-at price wouldn't be higher than the new price, and Skipped rows won't. No Shopify prices change until you start or schedule the sale.

Choose Start after I review for a permanent change, which stays until you click Restore prices, or Schedule start and end for a sale that restores itself at the end. Either way, SalePilot saves each variant's previous price and compare-at price first, and a restore skips any variant whose price was changed elsewhere in the meantime. For broad targeting, one review loads at most 500 products and 2,500 variants and warns you when the preview is capped, so split very large catalogs into narrower sales.

Plans differ by the number of successful variant changes per month and how many scheduled sales can run at the same time. Previews, skipped rows and restores don't count toward usage; see pricing for the limits.

How do you avoid mistakes when bulk editing prices?

Most bulk pricing errors come from the same few gaps, whichever method you use. Run through this list before you save or import:

  • Export a dated CSV backup first, even if you edit in the bulk editor or an app.
  • Test the change on 2 or 3 products, check them on the storefront, then run the rest.
  • Check compare-at prices: after the edit, each one must still be higher than its price, or the sale disappears from the storefront.
  • Check margins against cost per item, especially after a decrease, so the new price still covers cost, fees and shipping.
  • Check market catalogs that use fixed prices: those override your admin prices and won't follow your edit.
  • Decide how you'll undo the change before you make it. Our guide to undoing bulk price changes compares the options.
  • Write down what changed and when, so you can explain an order placed at an old price later.

Frequently asked questions

Can you bulk edit prices on Shopify without an app?

Yes. Select products in Products and click Bulk edit to change the Price and Compare-at price columns, or export a product CSV, change the prices in a spreadsheet and import it with Overwrite products with matching handles selected.

Can the Shopify bulk editor increase prices by a percentage?

Shopify's bulk editor guide describes no percentage or formula option, so you enter final prices. Calculate them in a spreadsheet and import a CSV, use a market catalog adjustment for one market, or use an app that applies percent changes.

What are the price columns in a Shopify product CSV?

In Shopify's current template they are Price and Compare-at price. Older exports and templates use Variant Price and Variant Compare At Price. Each variant has its own row.

How do I undo a bulk price edit on Shopify?

Re-import the untouched CSV export you made before the edit, with overwrite selected. If you made the change with SalePilot, Restore prices puts back the saved previous price and compare-at price, and skips any variant whose price was changed elsewhere since.

How many prices can SalePilot change at once?

Plans are set by successful variant changes per month, from 1,000 on Lite to 250,000 on Agency. For all products, collections or advanced conditions, one review loads at most 500 products and 2,500 variants and warns you if the preview is capped.
